I thought most of it was for safety requirements, not emissions? You can test a car for emissions, getting crash test safety ratings requires more resources and you have to wreck a few cars.

Most of it was to keep money in MB’s pocket because consumers were importing the cars they wanted instead of buying the crap Mercedes decided to sell here.

That’s the bullshit part. I can buy a 1990 mini cooper with carbs and no airbags to bring here but I can’t brin gin a 1996 Mini Cooper that has fuel injection and airbags.
